The Wellbeing Uprising

I want to challenge the language we use

“If I can do it, anyone can,”

“It’s OK not to be OK”

and

“You’ve got this”

… all make my ears bleed!

I won’t stand on the sidelines and hear words that hurt anymore, I don’t want to listen to anyone who starts a story with “If I can do it, anyone can” because it simply isn’t true.  I understand they did a hard thing, I feel empathy for the tough time they had but I won’t accept the wilful ignorance of assuming other people can do what they did just because they did it.

We all have different resources available to us.  We all have different means – financial, emotional, physical and spiritual.  We all begin from different places.

I have every sympathy for someone who has achieved “against the odds” I wonder if “if I can do it, anyone can” is really code for “this has been challenging, please can someone tell me I did well” And if it is, then I’d be the first to say… “That sounded really hard, I’m so glad you achieved what you did. Good for you.”  I’d want to celebrate with them.

Let’s think about the language we use more carefully.  Let’s be aware of the energy we give out and recieve with our words.

I believe we need to examine honest self-care. Self-care is not a face mask or a glass of wine.  We can look at as many instagram posts expounding the virtues of spending time in nature, cold water therapy and meditating as we like but if these self-care activities feel inaccessible to you then they become another stick to beat yourself with… and maybe you return to the wine?

Self-care begins and ends with a study of what you really value.  One persons list of self-care activities will be the next persons list of distractions.  What will really nurture your mind, body and soul? I believe we need individualised prescriptions of peaceful, playful or purposeful mini-missions to bring the feelings of self-care into our reality.

PS Don’t wait for me at the wild swimming lake – I won’t be there!

It’s time to simplify our systems.  What is causing the overwhelm right now?  Is it professional or personal?  Are you living in a perpetual juggle of. All. The. Things?  One long to-do list or maybe two long to-do lists because you’ve divided them into home and work?

Does your system help you to prioritise what is urgent and important and do you know how to shift things quickly off that list?
